In my architecture studio course, we began with an exploratory exercise centered on perception and reality, designed to prime our approach to developing a design for Miami's Overtown neighborhood. As part of this exercise, we analyzed assigned films, dissecting their narrative and visual language. We then translated our interpretations of perception within the cinematic context into conceptual representations, creating either a storyboard or collage that informed our understanding of spatial and experiential design.
Who pulls the strings of Pandora?
This collage explores the intricate power dynamics and perceptions within James Cameron’s Avatar (2009), delving into the dualities of harmony and exploitation. By juxtaposing visual and conceptual elements, the piece examines the forces shaping Pandora—from the Na'vi’s spiritual interconnectedness to humanity’s technological dominance. It poses a central question about agency and control, inviting viewers to reflect on broader themes of colonization, environmental stewardship, and the impact of perspective on reality.
